Eighteenth Day

Image result for black and white pictures I am on a train and me and my mom are going to Wyoming for my uncles wedding. When we get on the train we see the conductor is trying to welcome us onto the train in a nice way but the way he looks at me make me feel insecure...

This was a fun prompt to work with since I love trains. I could have added a few more details to better paint the picture of what it was like to ride a train. It would have been helpful to add more detail about how the girl remembered being on the train in forty eight. This would be a good one to rewrite and add some of the history about the train crash as well. I will probably do that in the future. What do you think?

Seventeenth Day

It was another school day for Tyler. He had walked into school, and you know same as usual people making fun of him. But today he couldn't take it anymore, he didn’t want people to step on him anymore. He felt like he needed to change or make a change in the world. So he thought, well, he was good at inventing so he wanted to invent something. Something that would prove everybody wrong, even his family.

This prompt was interesting, it looked like the basic "people are picking on me" prompt but the invention idea gave me a new exciting direction to go. When I first looked at the prompt I thought that Tyler could just change and reinvent himself, but then I thought that he could actually invent an android version of himself. Of course it had to have a "dangers of technology" twist at the end. This story came pretty easy to me and I enjoyed writing it. What do you think?

Sixteenth Day

That there was a middle schooler that joined wrestling. He surprised himself by easily mastering all the moves.

This is yet another story where I went a different direction than the one most people would go. It would be great to write a wrestling story that included all the terminology and concentrated on the sport, but I never took wrestling in school and this would show if I tried to write it that way.  Sometimes you are faced with prompts that are very specific and that's fine if you know the subject but when you don't it is best to admit that you don't and write the story around things that you do know.  I like writing the "I don't know" stories so we can all learn about the subject together.  That's why the wrestling coach was reading from a book.  I like to add strange things that may not fit, like radioactive monsters in a small town that is known fro nuclear tests.  It is a first draft so don't think that much about it.  You may just have to throw things out there and see what sticks sometimes.  You can always edit it later and there is always that delete key.  What do you think?

My brother brought a jackalope home when he was hunting

Ah, the jackalope story. I had fun writing this and drew on my experiences with animals that I have had over my lifetime. Some of the events, like choking your best friend would not happen the way they were written, but the jackalope story is fantasy so anything could happen. I tried to add "Show and Tell" to the story since most people would be familiar with that. I also added the envious friend Denise as a character since most people have had one of those in their lives. Toward the end I tried to describe how the girl was getting back at her brother. I tried to leave it up to your imagination as to what she would do. Would she glue the horns on him or attack him with them? It was fun to let my imagination go wherever it wanted on this story. What do you think?

Fourteenth Day

It was just 27 years ago when I lost my beloved one. But I just remember it just like it was yesterday. See, I lost her to a car accident. Our relationship was rough and we fought, but it was my fault. It was my fault that I was mad and swerved the CAR!......sigh… I wish I had the power to go back, so I would appreciate her more. Her name was Evalynn, 23 year old Evalynn. I met her through Med School. Yes I was training to be a neurosurgeon, hard-working, too. But, I wasn’t giving my hardest-work to Evalynn. I would try my hardest to be peaceful, but I was the one that would start the fight. Now before going on into the story. I would like you to get to know me. My name is Ashton, I’m 50 years old, I'm a successful neurosurgeon, I like to read books and write poems. And that’s how Evalynn liked me. She wore these owl glasses that were always cute for her, she read books and did creative writing, and she liked tea better than coffee. And that’s how I liked her, too. Like I said we met in Med school. She was training to be a pharmacist and me, a neurosurgeon. But, the car swerved liked our relationship…… then it ended. Now I am left alone and deciding what to do with my life.

This prompt had a difficult subject to deal with so I concentrated on the positive aspects of the relationship instead of the sad way it ended. I believed from the prompt that Ashton did love Evalynn and they had some good time before their troubles. The story is basic "lost love" plot that you would see on any Hallmark Movie, only in the movie there would be a happy ending. The prompt gave me the characters, setting and plot, so all I needed to do was to flesh it out a bit. What do you think?

Thirteenth Day

A giraffe is scared of heights.

I called this story "High Anxiety" for obvious reasons. I placed Gerry the Giraffe in a zoo setting instead of a natural setting since it was a place people are more familiar with. Most people have been too a zoo so it is easier for them to picture in their mind. I liked the idea of the "Horse Whisperer" so I added that and just changed the animal. When I write I sometimes like to gather things from different sources and mix them together. I call this process "Soup Stories". Putting a setting from one source, characters from another and plot, or story line from another. This story is predictable and might make a good picture book. What do you think?

Twelfth Day

Image result for origami demon   an evil spirit attacking through origami.

In this story I used the evil spirits as the main characters. As with most of my stories I did not take the obvious route. I could have done something on a transformers theme and had the monster change shapes, but the "evil spirit" part of the prompt guided me on a different direction. I don't really know if that was the best way to go, but I enjoyed having the two characters play off each other. Since my background is management I have seen this "training" scenario many time and just fell into it. Sometimes that is the best way go, just write something that you are familiar with. My guess is that someone younger would have a different take on this prompt. What do you think?
