"Setting" This Ole' House
This is a picture of an old house (obviously). It's not a house that people would pay a lot of attention to unless you lived next to it. As writers we should pay attention to the things around us. Everything we see could be a story or at least play a part in a story. When you look at this what do you see? What are some of the things that you think about when you look at it? What do feel when you look at it? What do you imagine it smells like inside? What do you imagine it sounds like inside? Write down some keywords that might help you describe this place.
Maybe just some call words and phrases you could elaborate on?
Old (obviously)
Has seen many lives pass through
Ghosts stuck in the walls
Abandoned possessions
Empty windows
Worn linoleum
Naked bulbs
Forgotten flowers returning year to year
Volunteer flowers
These are just a few ideas to help you create a "setting" for your story. Now obviously this house has weathered many storms and neglect over the years, but it didn't look like this when it was first built. At some point this house was new. What are some words and phrases that might help to describe this house back then?
New (Fresh Everything)
No one had ever lived there
Newly planted trees and flowers
Hardwood Floors
Fresh paint and wallpaper
New curtains
So our "Setting" can be an old house or a new one. This could be our setting for many generations that passed through. Our Characters reactions would be very different depending on when they lived in the house. Think about how proud the people must have been to build and move into this house. Compare that with the people who finally had to leave this place.
I hope you are getting a few ideas for your story. Here is a link to a song from many years ago called This Ole House. It may give you some more ideas.
